Applied FLUX Workshop
Description
This is a hands-on continuation of the introductory two-day FLUX/Bathtub workshop conducted in 2009. In this one-day workshop, we will focus on the finer points of applying FLUX for the estimation of loads. Some prior experience with the software is strongly recommended, although attendance at the 2009 introductory course is not a prerequisite.
We will spend a few minutes introducing the software’s 2010 enhancements that facilitate the exploration and analysis of loading relationships. (Participants will experience them firsthand through exercises.) More significantly, we will discuss seven load estimation methods in FLUX, as well as strengths and weaknesses of each. We will also explore ways to evaluate the results of the methods. The workshop will also help users recognize when specific approaches are inadvisable and the alternative approaches in those situations. The linkage between sampling design and data analysis (flux approach) will likewise be examined in some detail.
A large portion of the workshop will be dedicated to case studies that illustrate with “real life” examples the application of FLUX in differing situations. We will use these case studies as the basis for further “what if” exploration with the participants.

Water Words That Work Workshop
Description
Water resources scientists, engineers, and other professionals often struggle to explain technical issues to the public in concise, easily understood terms. Communications expert Eric Eckl has developed a series of techniques to assist professionals in development of clear, concise public messages.
This one-day workshop introduces the language and terminology of rivers, streams, lakes, and water-related issues that is easily understood by the public and non-technical policy makers. Participants will learn and practice a four-step writing method for translating data, interpreting scientific reports, and clarifying local and state environmental policy decisions. Workshop participants will also learn tips to aid in preparation of oral communications that use the vocabulary and perspective of everyday citizens, allowing translation of technical information into communications that are clear and compelling. Eric Eckl is an enthusiastic and energetic instructor who uses a combination of lecture, exercises, and small group activities to create a workshop that is entertaining and productive.
Water Words That Work is appropriate for all water resources professionals who must communicate with non-technical audiences, especially citizens and public servants.
