Summer 2008 Frequently Asked Questions

What are the dates of Summer Term 2008?

The entire Summer Term (Summer Term = May Session + Summer Session) lasts 13-weeks, Tuesday, May 27-Friday, August 22, but most classes will meet in one of the shorter time frames listed below.

May Session lasts 3-weeks, Tuesday, May 27-Friday, June 13.

Summer Session lasts 10-weeks, and will run in the following order:

  • First 4-week Session
      
     Monday, June 16-Friday, July 11
  • Second 4-week Session
       Monday, July 14-Friday, August 8
  • 6-week Session
       Monday, June 16-Friday, July 25
  • 8-week General Session
       Monday, June 16-Friday, August 8
  • 10-week Session
       Monday, June 16-Friday, August 22

How do visiting students apply for Summer Term 2008?

No application is necessary. Visiting students just need to fill out a Registration and Cancel/Add form. If there is space in the class, you can take it. Please look at the prerequisites before you choose to enroll in a course! You may need departmental approval. Full instructions for registration can be found in the How to Register section.

When does registration for Summer Term 2008 begin?

  • Continuing students—April 8
  • Non-admitted and visiting students—April 15

You must register by the Monday of the week the course starts to avoid a late registration fee.

Do I have to pay a Student Services Fee?

If you are admitted to a degree program, this fee varies depending upon the number of credits you take. For detailed information, see the Summer Term Fees section.

What is the Collegiate and Technology Fee?

These fees are used by individual colleges to fund technology projects or for other purposes. They are nonrefundable. Unless otherwise indicated, the fee is charged by your college of enrollment and it applies to the sum total of all credits taken during the Summer Term. How do I register?

You have up to four ways to register including online, in person, by mail, or by fax. Full instructions for registration can be found in the How to Register section.

How do I cancel a course?

All changes must be done officially (in-person at a One Stop Student Services Center, by Web, mail, or fax) and they are effective on the date received, not the day that you stop attending class. For detailed information, see the How to Change Your Credit Registration and Obtain Refunds section.

How do I get my grades?

Your grades may be viewed at One Stop Grades & Transcripts. Most instructors also accept a self-addressed, stamped envelope in which a grade will be returned.

How do I transfer credits to another institution?

Credits earned by students at the University of Minnesota may be applicable toward a degree at another institution under policies determined by that institution. If you are a non-admitted or visiting student taking U of M graduate-level coursework that you wish to apply toward a future U of M Graduate School program, be sure to check with your future program about limits and conditions governing work taken prior to formal admission.

How do I get my E-mail and gain Internet access?

E-mail and Internet services are provided at no charge to students for the term in which they are actively registered in credit courses. Some restrictions on access apply. Users must be aware of user rights and responsibilities. For detailed information, see the E-mail and Internet Services section.

How many credits can I take?

Maximum credit loads are 20 for undergraduate students and 18 for graduate students. Exceptions require approval from your College Scholastic Committee.

What is considered full-time status?

Undergraduate students are considered full-time if the sum of the credits taken during Summer Term equals or exceeds 12. Graduate students are considered full-time if the sum of the credits taken during Summer Term equals or exceeds 6. For questions related to loan deferment, contact your loan processor; for questions related to financial aid credit requirements, contact One Stop Student Services.

When do I pay my tuition and fees?

Billing statements are sent out three times over the Summer Term: June 14 (payment due July 9), July 12 (payment due August 6), and August 9 (payment due August 27). Each time you register, change your registration, or send in a payment, your account is adjusted. There is no installment plan available in the summer. Is financial aid available?

To be eligible for financial aid administered through Office of Student Finance (OSF), you must be officially admitted to a University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (UMTC) degree or eligible certificate program effective for Summer Term 2008. New students admitted for the 2008-2009 academic year (effective fall semester 2008) are not eligible for summer 2008 financial aid. Non-admitted or visiting students are not eligible for OSF summer financial aid. For detailed information, see the Financial Aid section.
