Groundwork
All Online Mentoring clients begin by registering for Groundwork.

Groundwork is an introductory, no-obligation exchange in which you submit, via the Web, up to ten pages of your writing, a one-page writer's autobiography, a one-page statement about your goals for a mentorship, and indicate your choice of mentors, if you have one.

If you're not sure how to choose a mentor or which mentor may be right for you, you may have us match you with the right mentor.

To assure the right match for you and your mentor, the program director will thoughtfully review your Groundwork before forwarding it to your mentor. This will be done with respect and confidentiality.

Within three weeks, you'll receive a personal reply from your mentor offering general comments about your writing, suggesting how you might work together most productively, and offering practical approaches to meeting your goals within the type of mentorship you choose.

If you decide to continue, you may then register for Mentorship I (three hours), Mentorship II (six hours), or Mentorship III (nine hours), depending on how much of your mentor's you feel you need.

All mentorship offer:

  • Three, six, or nine hours of your mentor's time reading your work, commenting on it, answering your questions, and giving advice. Your mentor's time may include reviewing and reflecting upon your writing, forming questions, creating writing exercises for you, recommending books, and so on.

  • The opportunity to decide with your mentor how many exchanges will be needed to accomplish your agreed-upon goals and how long your mentorship will last. There are no prescribed limits.

  • Confidential, one-on-one exchanges between you and mentor through your personal Web page. Only you, your mentor, and the Split Rock program director will have access to your mentorship page.

  • Clear, easy, wholly Web-based processes for sending and receiving manuscript documents and accompanying letters.

  • Prompt replies. The time it takes for your mentor to reply will depend upon how many pages or poems you submit at one time.

  • A complete list on your Web page of all your submissions, replies, and correspondence with your mentor.

  • The services of our dedicated, experienced staff.

  • The option to enroll for a second or subsequent mentorship with the same mentor without completing another Groundwork submission.
