Applying to the Intensive English Program
To be accepted into our program you must prove that you have graduated from high school, have at least two years of high school- level English, and verify that you have the funds to cover your expenses during the time you are studying in the United States. Fill out an application form for full-time admission and send it to the Minnesota English Language Program (MELP), along with a copy of your high school diploma or college transcript, and your signature to verify your source of funding.
The application deadline for each term is seven (7) weeks prior to the beginning of classes. Overseas students are advised, however, to send all application documents at least two (2) months prior to the beginning of the term in which they intend to enroll. Those who wish to apply later are still encouraged to do so, but should keep in mind that it may be extremely difficult to secure a visa in a short time.
After we receive your application, we will send you an I-20 form and a letter of admission. Take the I-20 form to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate and ask for an F-1 student visa. Due to increased security, the visa process can take one month or more to be completed. We advise you to allow plenty of extra time for the visa process when making your plans to come to the MELP.
Once you arrive, an English proficiency test will be given to determine your level of English, followed by an orientation session for new students.
Application for Part-Time Study
You can apply to attend the Minnesota Intensive English Program on a part-time basis. To be considered as a part-time student, you must take three or fewer courses per term. Fill out the part-time application form and send it to the Minnesota English Language Program along with a copy of your high school diploma or college transcript and your signature to verify your funding.
