Program for Individualized Learning
It's as unique as you!
Create an individualized degree based on your experiences, interests, and goals. The Program for Individualized Learning (PIL) degree combines a strong liberal arts component with an interdisciplinary or specialized academic concentration Personal and professional experience can be used as the basis for project learning that will complement traditional course work.
Because you will integrate knowledge gained from University courses, courses taken elsewhere, workplace settings, community contexts, and individual life experiences, PIL students must be self-directed learners and critical thinkers with effective communication skills, particularly writing.
The PIL degree culminates in a capstone project under the direction of a faculty member and a final graduation dossier of the student's learning.
"This was one of the most valuable experiences of my life. I am grateful that the University of Minnesota found value in my past education, military experience, and current interests. My volunteer work was highly valued. I felt uplifted by those in charge of the program and, in turn, I am compelled to help others in similar ways." - PIL graduate
