Filing a Degree Program

The Degree Program Form and your Final Project Proposal must be submitted to the program office by the time you complete 15 credits.  If you are pursuing your MLS degree full-time, you must obtain an advisor and complete this form by the end of your second term.

1.  Obtain a student copy of your transcript.

2.  Complete the Degree Program Form:  Start with the very first course that will apply toward your degree and then list, in chronological order, the courses you have taken and plan to take to accomplish your MLS.  The last course listed must be the Final Project course (LS 8002).

3.  Complete a Final Project Proposal: Describe your final project as you see it at this point in your program.  Include information on the disciplines you are combining and how you intend to accomplish your research and/or creative form (e.g., interviews, surveys, painting, creative writing, etc.).  The proposal should be one to two pages in length and it must be discussed with, and signed by, your advisor.  Closely review the Final Project Instructions regarding the different types of projects and specific requirements for each.

4.  Submit the completed Degree Program Form and Final Project Proposal:  Your program forms and proposal must be signed by your advisor, then submitted to the MLS office.  We will review the forms and proposal, obtain the signature of the DGS, and forward them to the Graduate School for review.  A meeting among you, your advisor(s), and the DGS may be required to discuss your proposal for a traditional, thesis-type project; such a meeting is required for all creative projects.  Note:  If you are transferring credits from another institution, you must attach an official transcript from the institution(s) you attended.

Do not be concerned about adding or deleting courses after submitting the Degree Program Form as changes are easily incorporated later.  A Petition Form, which sounds more ominous than it is, will need to be submitted to the MLS office to make changes.
