Finding an Advisor
Advisors serve an important role in your program. They can serve as mentors and/or “experts” in the fields you are exploring.
You may have more than one advisor, but at least one must be associated with the MLS Program. See the MLS Faculty Profile for a list of potential advisors, their interests, and expertise. In addition to your MLS advisor, you may approach faculty members from other departments to be co-advisors.
You may choose an advisor as soon as you feel you need one, but you must have an adviser by the time you are halfway through your program.
The Director of Graduate Studies will serve as your academic advisor until you choose one of your own. You may choose your advisor early (after a class or two), or wait until you have 12-15 credits.
To introduce yourself to a potential advisor, you will need to prepare short statements for the faculty member’s review which 1) summarize your area(s) of interest in the MLS, and 2) outline any ideas you may have for your final project.
These should be submitted via e-mail to the instructor before calling him or her to talk about advising.
Once you have chosen an advisor, please submit the following form to the MLS office:
Upon earning 12-15 credits, please submit the following forms to the MLS office:
You must have an advisor by the time you have earned 15 credits. A hold will be placed on your record if you have not submitted these three forms to the MLS office by this time.
Refer to Filing a Degree Program Form for more details.
