ICP Degree Planning
Proposal Development Schedules
It is essential that you meet with your adviser when you are developing your proposal. As you continue the process of writing, ICP recommends that you make an appointment with your adviser every two weeks or so until the proposal is complete and ready for the area adviser's review. You may have other commitments or exams; however, you should create time in your schedule to write the proposal and discuss its philosophy and structure with your adviser. It is a good idea to complete the proposal early; if the proposal is complete, you can be assured that the coursework you complete will be accepted into your degree, and you won’t be worried about which courses to select at registration.
Registration Holds
If your proposal is not completed promptly, you will have an OA hold (registration hold) place on your record that prevents you from registering. You will need to see your adviser and submit a copy of your proposal, in order to have any action taken on this hold. Adviser appointment times fill up swiftly during pre-registration and registration periods. Consequently, it is recommended that you hand in drafts in a timely manner, and do not let the proposal go until the last minute with the expectation that you will get an appointment.
Policies and Procedures
You should consult the www.onestop.umn.edu for all information regarding University schedules and policies. After you become a major in degree planning status, and you wish to request exceptions to any policies, first contact your ICP adviser. Here are some guidelines to policies concerning registration, course evaluation and course changes.
Petition Form and Procedures
You should use a petition form to formally apply for exceptions. These are then evaluated by the CCE Scholastic Committee. Some common exceptions include:
- Requests for Late Add/Drops
- Requests for 24 credit residency exceptions.
- Requests for Leave of Absence and Return
- Requests for 13-credit exemption: see www.onstop.umn.edu. If you are taking fewer than 13 credits for a semester, it is essential that you request exemption from the 13-credit policy by completing a form on-line, so that you will not be penalized financially for taking fewer than 13 credits. The form comes to your ICP adviser, and then to the Scholastic Committee for approval.
- All U of M Liberal Education evaluations are petitioned through Laurel Carroll in 170 Morrill Hall and all transfer Liberal Education evaluations through Margaret Gardner in Admissions, 240 Williamson. Please submit a petition to the appropriate office and include a syllabus or course description of the course you wish to have evaluated.
Amendment Form and Procedures
After your proposal and contract have been formally approved by your area advisers, you are required to take the courses listed. These courses are based on an agreement between you and your advisors. If for any reason you need to make a change to your program, you can apply for an amendment, if you have a reasonable request. Consult with your ICP adviser, take the amendment form to the area advisor, and then return the completed form to your ICP adviser. Amendments should be used only when there is no other alternative.
Probation
If you are placed on probation as a result of either your term or your overall gpa falling below 2.0, you will need to see your ICP adviser to complete a Probation Agreement Form.
Graduation Review
You should schedule an appointment with your ICP adviser in the semester before you graduate to ensure that your program is on track for graduation. Your adviser will review your ICP contract and your APAS at that time. It is your responsibility to make this appointment, and to follow through on any recommendations your adviser offers.
