ICP Alumni News
Mario Garcia
(CSOM/Economics, B.S. Spring 2005) was a transfer student from Hamline who wanted both Economics and Carlson School of Management in his degree. His abilities in statistics are assisting him now, and he wants to investigate how he can use these skills in a graduate school environment. He started as a temp as an assistant to the director of the Research Management Group at Stanford University. Because of his interests, he was assigned two different projects. One project is to help create and maintain a embryonic stem cell database. The second is to analyze the school of medicine departments' budgets. The University may hire him full-time if funds are available. “ When pursuing the degree in the ICP, I was exposed to different fields. The opportunity to pursue my different interests in college gave way to the idea of doing something similar once I started a career. “Mario is contemplating doing a certificate program in Bioscience and Business at UC Santa Cruz Extension. After that, he plans on applying to graduate programs in Economics in the UC system. “Another dream I've been toying with lately is to start a bicycle trip this spring up the coast to Alaska and then across Canada camping along the way. Whatever comes to be, the experience I had with the ICP was very positive.”
Rebecca Sanchez (CSOM/ENR, B.S. Fall 2005) is currently in graduate school and working towards a M.Ed/licensure in Business and Industry Education. She sees teaching others as an important part of her life. Rebecca Sanchez wanted to incorporate CSOM, but also felt a strong pull toward ENR, which gave her some insight into the natural world. Her interests in fair trade practices were developed through internships on Coasta Rican coffee farms and so the two areas were complementary areas for her in ICP. She isalso considering a tour in the Peace Corp in South America as a future option, since one of her strong interests continues to be working on fair trade issues. See more on Rebecca Sanchez in c.c.e.times.
Jenny Nilsson (EPSY/HSci, BS Fall 2005) Jenny Nilsson chose ICP because it was offered to her as an individualized option through the UC1000 , a course for students transitioning back to college. She had a lot of personal challenges as a traditional student, but she was a very successful returning student, and won a scholarship also.
Jenny was enrolled in the Inter-College Program and completed a two-area Bachelor of Science. Her areas were Educational Psychology and History of Science and Technology. “I’d previously attended the U of MN – Morris, so I had several prerequisites out of the way. I completed the two areas and the rest of the graduation requirements in about two and a half years,” she remembers.
“The last semester I was at the U a position opened up in the training department of the software company where I work. They needed someone to take the lead creating multi-media training tools our customers could access 24/7 from our website. I already had the product knowledge necessary, and I was studying Educational Psychology so I could directly apply my studies to the new position.”
She finished her coursework this past summer and has now been developing curriculum for over a year. “I’m considering graduate school where I would study Curriculum and Instruction focusing on science education. I hope to find an educational software company where I can continue to apply (and expand on) what I’ve learned.”
