Degree Requirements

Specific Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science degrees

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

Students will likely choose at least two areas in the liberal arts:

1.  Arts and Humanities

2.  History and Social Sciences

And a third area in Communications, Science and Health Science, or Applied, Technical, and Professional. A bachelor's degree also requires four semesters of a language; or two semesters of one language and eight additional credits of related culture studies.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.)

Students will likely choose course work from these two areas:

1.  Science and Health Science

2. Applied, Technical, and Professional

And students choose a third area in either Arts and Humanities, History and Social Sciences, or Communications (including at least one course in calculus or one upper division course in quantitative and critical thinking).

Both the B.A. and the B.S. degree programs require a minimum of 50 upper-division credits in three of the five areas, with a minimum of 15 credits in each area.

Both degree programs require the upper division introductory course, ICP 3001, ICP Degree Planning. This is a three-credit course which re-introduces returning students to upper division University-level learning and assists them in making the best selection of areas, courses, and projects to fulfill their goals toward graduation.

Credit from prior learning may be used to fulfill the requirements of the degree. A specified amount of upper division transfer course work may be allowed to count toward the major; however, transfer course work at the upper division is evaluated by related departments. Opportunities for project-based learning also can be incorporated into the degree on a limited basis, up to 12 credits.

Students must also fulfill the Liberal Education requirements required by the University. Transfer credit from other universities and community colleges may be applied toward these requirements. For a current list of courses which fulfill the University of Minnesota Liberal Education requirements, see Onestop and click on Registrar/Liberal Education.requirements.
