Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How long will it take to finish this degree?
A. The length of time it takes to complete the program depends upon how much transferable course work you bring, how it distributes to meet requirements, and how heavily you’ll be able to engage in your course work. If you come with 60 semester credits completed and can manage to take two courses/6-8 credits per semester while working (the maximum credit load recommended for someone working full-time), you can complete in three to four years. If you can manage to go to school full-time by working part-time, you can complete in two years.
Q. Can I finish this degree through online/evening course work?
A. Yes, this program was designed to accommodate working adults’ schedules.
Q. The Multidisciplinary Studies degree option seems very flexible. Can I pick any courses I want?
A. Multidisciplinary Studies is one of the most flexible programs at the University, but it does have a number of structural provisions: You must select upper-division courses (3000- 5000-level) according to the degree structures outlined and with the ultimate approval of faculty and advisers. You must meet the University of Minnesota’s Liberal Education and writing requirements
Q. Is a second language required to complete the degree?
A. A second language is not a graduation requirement for the B.S. degree in this program. However, the B.A. degree requires four semesters of a second language or two semesters of a second language and eight semester credits of related culture courses. The high school preparation requirement for admission to the University of Minnesota (two years of a single foreign language in high school or its equivalent) is required of all students who graduated from high school in 1987 or later.
Q. Will my previous course work transfer to this program?
A. Course work from comparably accredited institutions of higher learning that has equivalent course work taught transfers here routinely. Course work from comparably accredited institutions that does not have equivalents here must be reviewed for transfer. Technical college course work, course work from unaccredited institutions or from differently accredited institutions does not routinely transfer. Students should contact the Main Admissions Office in 240 Williamson with general questions regarding transferability of course work. Students may also check on transferability online with the Course Applicability System at www.mn.transfer.org.
Q. Do employers value this type of degree?
A. Most employers are impressed with the initiative and creativity it takes to create a personalized degree. Students who incorporate theoretical and applied perspectives in their degree can often discuss their learning more fully. Students with individualized majors often interview well because the proposal development process helps them understand the reasons behind their course work choices, and employers recognize this ability as valuable.
