International Students
International students may apply for admission to the Bachelor of Applied Science degree with a major in Respiratory Care. International students are not citizens of the United States but are admitted to this country temporarily and solely for the purpose of study. The University is required by the federal government to monitor their progress. Non-U.S. citizens who are classified as refugees or permanent residents are not included in this group.
ADMISSIONS CRITERIA
Academic record International students are expected to meet the equivalent of the specific criteria for GPA and certification as stated in the admissions information for the Respiratory Care major.
English proficiency International students applying for the BAS major in Respiratory Care and whose native language is not English must present a score of at least 572 on the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or 230 on the computer-based TOEFL, or 84 on Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) to be considered fluent.
Students applying from their home country can make arrangements for the TOEFL through the nearest American Consulate. Prospective students already in Minnesota can make arrangements to take the test through the U of M Testing Center .
Students who have completed two full years of transferable credit with at least one freshman composition course at a U.S. institution are not required to take the TOEFL.
ADMISSIONS PROCESS
International students must complete the International Student Application and Financial Certification Statement forms.

POLICIES FOR ADMITTED STUDENTS
Admission to major program International students may only be admitted to pursue a baccalaureate degree in a major field of study. Admission to a certificate program is not acceptable.
Admission for Fall Semester only International students are admitted Fall Semester only.
Minimum credit load International students admitted Fall 2004 and beyond are required under the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) policy to register for 12 credits. While the INS requires a minimum of 12 credits, all undergraduate students at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, are charged for 13 credits. Exceptions to minimum credit load must be approved by International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS).
Online coursework limitation International students are limited to taking one online or distance learning course, not to exceed three credits, per semester of the 12-credit full-time class load. This limitation does not include classroom-based courses with Web-enhanced sites. Beyond this 12-credit limitation, additional online credits may be taken.
Tuition International students admitted to the Respiratory Care major in partnership with Mayo Clinic pay Minnesota resident tuition rates.
Employment F-1 visa regulations allow students to work 20 hours/week on campus while school is in session and full-time during semester breaks and the summer vacation period. However, "On Campus" means the Twin Cities campus and does not include the Rochester Center unless the salary check is issued by the University of Minnesota. Therefore, international students participating in this Rochester-based program will have few or no employment options.
