Admission

Manufacturing Technology

Applications to the BAS Manufacturing Technology (MT) major are carefully reviewed to determine completion of the following admission requirements:

    • A minimum of 45 semester credits transferable to the BAS major
    • A 2.5 or better cumulative grade point average preferred.
    • Prerequisite lower division courses for the BAS MT program completed or in progress (Physics I, Calculus, Statistics, Chemistry, Micro- or Macro-economics) with a grade of C- or better.

STEP 1:   Evaluate Your Background

Detailed information on how your completed coursework will transfer to the University is available via the Minnesota Course Applicability System (MnCAS). Use the guest login to the course equivalency guide of this online system to identify which courses will transfer and apply to a degree program at the U of M.

If you have completed some coursework at this University or a metro community college, the MT Transfer Guide may assist you in reviewing the requirements you have met. Courses required for admission are identified in the Guide by an asterisk (*) in the left column.  Course names in the Transfer Guide reflect the general subject area; exact titles may vary from school to school.

If you would like to have an adviser evaluate your previous coursework for possible transfer to the BAS program, send the following information to:  Manufacturing Technology, College of Continuing Education, U of MN, 20 Classroom Office Building, 1994 Buford Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55108-6039.

    • A completed planning chart request
    • Your academic transcript(s).  Unofficial transcripts OK for this purpose.
    • Your resume or work history (optional)

A Planning Chart will be returned to you based on an unofficial evaluation of your transcript indicating which course requirements you have met and which ones remain to be completed.  Afterward, to begin Step 2, you may make an appointment with an adviser.

STEP 2:  Fulfill Prerequisite Coursework and Make Application

A CCE academic adviser can assist you in planning to fulfill the MT major admission requirements. Contact CCEinfo@umn.edu or 612-624-4000 (toll-free 1-888-330-8636). After you are admitted, the adviser will work with you each step of the way as you complete the work for your degree.  Please refer to the section below which corresponds to your student status.

A. Transfer Student (new to the U of M but have completed college course work elsewhere)

If you have already completed at another institution all the MT major requirements for admission, you may apply for transfer admission to the BAS with an MT major.  If you have not completed all of the major prerequisite courses, you may complete them at another institution, as an admitted student at another college at the University of Minnesota, or as a non-admitted student at the University (see below).

B. U of M Student (admitted to a college within any of the five campuses)

If you are already admitted to a college within the University of Minnesota, you may discuss your interest in changing majors with your current academic adviser.  Begin enrolling in MT major admission requirement courses.   When you have completed or have in progress all of these courses, you may request a transfer to the College of Continuing Education by completing an Application for Change of College form.  You may also wish to run a "What-If" APAS (Academic Progress Audit System) report to monitor your degree progress.  This report provides detailed information about the courses you have completed and still need to complete.

C. Non-Admitted U of M Student (not admitted to any college within any of the five U of M campuses.)

If you enroll in U of M course(s) and are not admitted to any U of M college, you may be referred to as non-admitted. Please view our eGuide for details on how to register as a non-admitted student.  You may take MT classes as a non-admitted student, but you must complete the MT admission requirements to apply for admission to the MT major.   Remember that non-admitted students have limited course options and may enroll only after admitted students, who have registration priority. Non-admitted students are not eligible for most federal and state student financial aid.   If you wish to apply for admission but still have some MT major admission requirements to complete, you should follow the procedures described in Item D for freshman applicants.   If you have fulfilled all the major admission requirements as a non-admitted student, follow the procedures in Item A for transfer students.

D. Freshman Applicant (no previous college course work)

If you have not completed any college course work, you may apply for admission to a U of M freshman-admitting college.  U of M colleges that admit freshmen include the College of Liberal Arts and the Institute of Technology. You will need to specify one of the majors offered by that college.  If you are admitted, complete the MT major admission requirements, and then you may request a transfer to the College of Continuing Education and the BAS MT major by completing an Application for Change of College form

E. International Student

Due to restrictions on student visas, the BAS MT major is not open for admission to international students. The program is designed to be completed through part-time evening course work. Although it may be possible for students to enroll full time in any given term, we cannot guarantee that a student can complete the program by full-time attendance every semester.
