Manufacturing Technology
Program Description
The Major. The Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) degree with a major in Manufacturing Technology (MT) responds to industry demand for credentialed knowledge workers who can meet the challenges of a transformed, hi-tech, global manufacturing sector. The curriculum is uniquely positioned to strike a balance between the technical and theoretical competencies required to analyze manufacturing systems and the business capabilities needed to respond to real-world organizational objectives.
This interdisciplinary major combines classes in manufacturing processes and systems, quality and cost control, supply chain, and regulation, with business finance, operations, and project management. MT learning outcomes translate directly to effective decision-making, innovation in process and product, and increased organizational productivity and competitiveness. The program is designed in partnership with University of Minnesota faculty and industry professionals. Practitioner faculty offer perspectives and insights based on extensive industry experience.
The Minor. For students who are pursuing a U of M bachelor’s degree in another field, the MT minor can open career avenues and enhance real-world value. See sidebar link for more information.
The Certificate. Approval pending 2008. For career professionals who wish to enhance their qualifications, the certificate provides foundational theory and cutting-edge practice.
Courses. Individual classes from the MT curriculum offer in-depth knowledge in a focused area for students interested in professional development or exploration of career possibilities.
Student Benefits
Through MT coursework, students can significantly advance their career progress. U.S. manufacturing makes the greatest contribution to American economic growth of any sector. Its recent rapid transformations have created a need, as yet unmet, for employees who understand the new global marketplace. Job requirements are quickly changing: while many traditional production jobs are being lost, new positions are being created that require the ability to compete and innovate in today’s complex technical and business environment. Students in the MT program will obtain excellent preparation for the emerging opportunities in the many enterprises that continue to thrive.
To meet their goals, students consult with an adviser to select the right course of study: the B.A.Sc., which is a nationally recognized baccalaureate degree; the minor; the certificate; or one or more targeted courses.
A course. A concentration. Or a degree.
