Application Process
Requirements | Application Process
To begin the application process, first identify the category (A, B, or C) which describes your situation, then follow the instructions.
A. New to the University of Minnesota, seeking Admitted Student Status
Remember to apply for official admission to the U of M BAS program only after you have completed the prerequisites or have these courses in progress; otherwise, your admission application or college transfer application will be denied. You may choose to complete the lower-division course work at the U of M while officially admitted to another college.
- Freshmen Applicants: If you have not completed any college course work, you may apply for admission to a freshman-admitting college and, if admitted, complete the BAS prerequisite courses. U of M colleges that admit freshmen include the College of Liberal Arts, the Institute of Technology, and the General College.
- Transfer Students without Some or All Prerequisites: If you have completed college course work elsewhere, are new to the U of M, and have not completed the BAS prerequisites, you can apply for admission as a transfer student to a college within the U of M that offers these prerequisites, such as, the College of Liberal Arts and Institute of Technology.
- Transfer Students with Prerequisites: If you are new to the U of M with completed or in progress BAS course prerequisites, apply for admission to the College of Continuing Education as a transfer student to the BAS degree program.
- Non-Admitted Student Status: Often, students begin at the U of M by enrolling in courses as a non-admitted student. If you are completing U of M courses as a non-admitted student, you are considered "new to the U of M, seeking admitted student status." Non-admitted students have limited course options and may enroll only after admitted students, who have registration priority. Non-admitted students are not eligible for most federal and state student financial aid.

B. U of M Student (admitted to a college within any of the five campuses)
If you are admitted to a college within the University of Minnesota, you may discuss your interest in changing majors with your current academic adviser. Begin enrolling in BAS prerequisite courses, which are identified by an asterisk (*) in the left column of the Transfer Guide. When you have completed or have in progress the prerequisite courses, you may apply for official college transfer. Request your change of academic status by completing an Application for Change of College form.
Non-Admitted Students: If you are completing U of M courses as a non-admitted student, you are considered "new to the U of M, seeking admitted student status" (see above).
Application Deadlines: Fall Semester, March 1; Spring Semester, October 1
C. International Students
Due to restrictions on student visas, the BAS degree program is not open for admission to international students. The program is designed to be completed through part-time evening course work. Although it may be possible for students to enroll full-time in any given term, we cannot guarantee that a student can complete the program by full time attendance every semester. These programs do not meet the spirit and the requirements of the laws for international students attending the University of Minnesota.
