Course Description
Designed to help health care professionals communicate with patients who speak Spanish. Following the course, the student will be able to:
- Use basic medical vocabulary in Spanish.
- Ask questions and provide answers in common medical situations in Spanish.
- Conduct patient interviews, medical histories, and physical exams in Spanish.
- Understand cultural factors impacting health and health care for Chicano/Latino patients.

Instructor
María Emilce López has an M.A. in both ESL and Hispanic Linguistics and teaches in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies. A native of Jujuy, Argentina, she studied and worked as a teacher there. María Emilce develops materials for teaching Spanish for specific purposes as well as creating technology-enhanced learning experiences.

• Medical Spanish: Interviewing the Latino Patient – A Cross-Cultural Perspective by Teresa Gonzalez-Lee, Harold J. Simon
• CD-ROMs containing dialogues between Chicano/Latino patients and health care providers, and interviews with professional health care providers to the Minnesota Chicano/Latino population. Available for purchase at the U of M Bookstore – East Bank in Coffman Union; 612-625-6000.

Cost
The course cost for 2007-2008 is $612.00, plus approximately $175.00 in associated University fees. Students in a degree program at the U of M will pay tuition/fees according to the college to which they are admitted. NOTE: You will be billed; do not send payment with registration.

Credit
This is a zero-credit course with a grade basis of S/N. Academic credit will not be granted. A credit version of this course is available through the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies.

It is possible to request and receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for this course. Speak to the instructor the first night of class about your intentions for continuing professional development.
This course is designed to meet the Minnesota Board of Nursing continuing education requirements. However, the nurse is responsible for determining whether this activity meets the requirements for acceptable continuing education. Other health care professionals should contact their appropriate boards.
