Description
Healthcare leaders and providers are required to be knowledgeable about the use of health information technology (HIT). The purpose of these modules is to prepare the healthcare workforce to gain knowledge and skills for processing and managing health care information. These modules integrate principles for information, cognitive, and computer sciences along with practical application in health care. The major emphasis is on supporting the healthcare workforce to adopt, implement, and effectively use HIT for improving patient safety, quality and efficient healthcare.

Overall Purpose
Develop a vision that informatics tools, principles, theories, and practices are used by nurses to make healthcare safer, effective, efficient, patient-centered, timely, and equitable.

Objectives

  • Discuss the purpose, function and components of health information technology
  • Describe a systematic approach to selection, adoption, implementation, and effective use of health information technology
  • Build knowledge for implementing information technology
  • Gain skills in processing and managing healthcare information
  • Explore ways of managing the costs of implementing health information technology

Target Audience
Health care leaders, providers, educators, informaticians, and students interested in the effective processing, managing, and communicating of data, information, and knowledge for improving patient safety, quality, and efficient helath care.

Procedure for Registering and Accessing Learning Modules
Learning modules will be accessed through the University of Minnesota WebCT course site. Access to the modules has a few simple steps, so please read through the instructions thoroughly before registering and accessing the learning module(s).

Step 1: Register for an individual module or both modules on the Registration Page.

Step 2: You will receive two e-mail communications acknowledging your registration and then alerting you that your course is ready. You will be assigned a unique Internet ID called an X.500 username. Upon receipt of these e-mails, login to the courses on the Login to Learning Modules page. NOTE: Upon accessing each module, you will have 30 days in which to complete the course.


Step 3: Follow the instructions within each module for which you are registered. A program learner assessment in the form of a quiz will be required for participants to complete at the end of each module. To receive CE credit for a module, you will have to pass an assessment quiz with a score of 80% or greater. Quizzes are scored automatically and you will be able to see your scores within a few moments after completing the assessment quiz. Upon successful completion of the assessment quiz, you will have the opportunity to print your certificate for continuing education credits.

System Requirements

Windows User Use Windows 98, ME, NT, 4.0, 2000, or XP and a 56k V.90 modem or better Internet connection.
Macintosh User You need a machine that can support Mac OS X and a 56k V.90 modem or better Internet connection.
E-mail Account You will need an e-mail account to receive registration and access communications.
