Continuing Your Education
There are many options to continue your education through the College of Continuing Education, the University of Minnesota, or any accredited academic institution. Credits earned in a certificate program may transfer to an undergraduate or graduate degree program.
If you plan to use a certificate in a degree program, consult with the adviser of the degree program for the details of admission to the degree program and how the certificate may be used.
Undergraduate Certificates
Accounting - Level I and II does not fit in a degree program, most students enrolled in this certificate have a baccalaureate degree and need the additional training for a new job or for CPA/CMA test prepartion.
Addiction Studies fits in the Inter-College Program Addiction Studies degree option.
Applied Business fits in the Bachelor of Applied Science degree option.
Computer Science does not fit into a degree program and is designed for students with a career need for additional computer skills.
Construction Management fits in the Bachelor of Applied Science Construction Management degree option.
Direct Marketing is developed for students with a liberal arts baccalaureate degree, and are working in the field of direct marketing. Certificate credits may transfer to the College of Liberal Arts in a journalism or marketing degree program.
Industrial Relations fits in the Industrial Relations degree program through the Humphery Institute or the Bachelor of Applied Science degree option.
Information Technology Infrastructure (ITI) fits in the Bachelor of Applied Science Information Technology Infrastructure degree option.
Interpreting is a unique certificate designed to meet the needs of the legal and health care communities working with immigrant populations. Currently there is no related degree option.
Ophthalmology Technician does not transfer to a current degree option at the University of Minnesota
Organizational and Professional Communication fits in the Bachelor of Science in Scientific & Technical Communication.
Wood and Paper Science is an online program designed for students without access to on-campus programs and need the content to continue working in the industry. May fit in a College of Natural Resources degree option.
Many of the undergraduate certificates may be used in the Inter-College Programs degree program.
Graduate Level Certificates
Addiction Studies fits with the Master of Liberal Studies degree program and has some degree possibilities with the School of Public Health.
Housing Studies may be used in the Master of Liberal Studies and the Master of Design, Housing and Apparel with a Housing Emphasis. Selected classes may apply toward graduate minors in either Gerontology or Family Policy in the College of Human Ecology. Outside the College of Human Ecology, students graduating in housing studies have pursed a Master of Urban & Regional Planning, Geographic Information Sciences, Public Health, Sociology, and Political Science.
Innovation Studies may be used in the Master of Liberal Studies degree program.
Nonprofit Management may be used in the Master of Liberal Studies degree program and the Executive Masters in Public Affairs through the Humphrey Institute.
Organizational and Professional Communication may be used in the Master if Liberal Studies degree program and the Master of Science in Scientific & Technical Communication.
Policy Issues in Work and Pay may be used in the Master of Liberal Studies degree program. The College of Continuing Education has agreements with the Industrial Relations Center at the Carlson School of Management, the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, and the Law School, which allow students to complete both a degree and the certificate program.
Transportation Studies can be used in graduate degree programs in the Institute of Technology and the Humphrey Institute.
