Career Options

According to economists in the National Bureau's Office of Occupational Statistics and Employment Projections, management and public relations positions are ranked as the third fastest growing fields in the state of Minnesota. These fields are predicted to grow by about 54 percent by the year 2008. By that same year, the number of marketing, advertising, and public relations manager positions will increase by 22 percent.

Service and technology industries will do the majority of hiring in the state of Minnesota over the next six years. Employment growth in the state is expected to average 1.5 percent annually between 1996 and 2006, increasing employment by 417,000 over the 10-year period. An estimated 42,000 jobs will be created in an average year from 1996 to 2006, compared to 51,000 each year during the 1986 to 1996 period. Almost all employment growth will come in wage and salary jobs rather than among the self-employed, as the share of total employment accounted for by self-employed workers continues to decline gradually. Self-employed workers accounted for 10.6 percent of total employment in 1986, made up 8 percent of total employment 10 years later, and are expected to account for only 7.1 percent in 2006.
