About 231,000 people in Minnesota work for nonprofit organizations. Half of these organizations are located in the Twin Cities area, although the entire state is home to more than 5,000 nonprofit businesses.
Human services are the top ranking nonprofit service offered in the state followed by healthcare agencies. Most people who work for nonprofits have a bachelor's degree and often continue their education in graduate or Ph.D. studies. The trend shows that many individuals move up quickly within these agencies and take on more responsibility.

There are many career growth opportunities in large institutions; however, smaller organizations can require the ability to move to other organizations by gaining skills. The nonprofit management career continues to grow and change. Government initiatives change more readily than in the past, which create new opportunities for growth as well as new nonprofit programs. These programs are often created at the federal, state, and local levels to address the needs of local populations.
