Service Provider Track

The undergraduate level service provider licensure track is designed to fulfill the academic requirements for both licensure and the certificate. After January 2008, to be a candidate for licensure, you must have a bachelor's degree, approximately 18 semester credits related to alcohol and drug counseling, and an internship of 880 clock hours. The internship experience will provide you with the opportunity to transfer the knowledge and skills gained in the academic portion of the service provider certificate to clinical practice. You may enroll for the internship sequence after the academic portion is completed. The course, "Professional Practice of Addictions Counseling," is a required prerequisite for the internship sequence and should be taken during the semester prior to registering for internship. Internships are planned as part of the "Professional Practice" course and must be approved by addiction studies faculty.

You also must demonstrate competency in the required 12 core functions: screening, intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, counseling, case management, crisis intervention, client education, referral, reports and record keeping, and consultation. The service provider track curriculum will train you in these required 12 core functions as required by the state for licensure.
