Program Requirements
This undergraduate program consists of two tracks: Self-Designed and Service Provider
SELF-DESIGNED TRACK REQUIREMENTS
Total credits required: Self-Designed track 8 core credts/12 elective credits
Core Courses (8 credits)
FSoS 3426/5426 Alcohol and Drugs: Families and Culture (3 cr.)
SW 5709 Applied Psychopharmacology for Human Service Professionals (2 cr.)
PubH 3005 Fundamentals of Alcohol and Drug Abuse (1 cr)
NOTE: You must inform the teaching assistant for the course that you are an Addiction Studies certificate student in order to get the assignments that are related to your certificate program.
SW 5711 Co-Occurring Addictive and Mental Health Disorders (2 cr.)
NOTE: This should be taken after PubH 3003/6003 and SW 5709
Core courses must be taken for a letter grade (on the A/F grading basis) and completed with a grade of C- or better.
Elective Courses (12 credits from courses related to addictions)
The College of Continuing Education requires a statement of intention outlining your rationale, purpose, and goals specifically related to the electives you choose. Elective courses must be related to addiction studies and be approved by the addiction studies adviser.
Note: Elective courses may require prerequisites that are not part of the certificate program requirements and cannot be used toward certificate completion.

Completion Requirements
To be awarded a certificate, you must submit a completed Application for Undergraduate Degree form online.
NOTE: The words Degree and Certificate are used interchangeably on the form . It is important for you to check the deadlines if you want to graduate in a specific term.
All courses in the certificate must be completed with a grade of C- or better. Core courses must be taken for a letter grade (on the A/F grading basis). Elective courses may be taken on the A/F grading basis or the S/N grading basis. The cumulative gpa for all certificate courses must be a 2.00 or better.
You must complete the certificate within four years of your admission date.
SERVICE PROVIDER TRACK
The undergraduate level service provider licensure track is designed to fulfill the academic requirements for both licensure and the certificate. After January 2008, to be a candidate for licensure, you must have a bachelor's degree, approximately 18 semester credits related to alcohol and drug counseling, and an internship of 880 clock hours. The internship experience will provide you with the opportunity to transfer the knowledge and skills gained in the academic portion of the service provider certificate to clinical practice. You may enroll for the internship sequence after the academic portion is completed. The course, "Professional Practice of Addictions Counseling," is a required prerequisite for the internship sequence and should be taken during the semester prior to registering for internship. Internships must be approved by addiction studies faculty.
You also must demonstrate competency in the required 12 core functions: screening, intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, counseling, case management, crisis intervention, client education, referral, reports and record keeping, and consultation. The service provider track curriculum will train you in these required 12 core functions as required by the state for licensure.

SW 5810 Group Therapy: Theory and Practice (3 cr.)
UC 4001 Professional Practice of Addictions Counseling (4 cr.)
NOTE: You must have completed all course work before enrolling in UC 4001.
Internship
UC 4002 Internship I (8 cr.)
NOTE: Eight credits of Internship in Substance Abuse Counseling UC 4002 is designed to meet the 880 hours of internship required by the state for licensure. Please review the Internship Manual. The Internship is completed at the end of your course work. Fall and Spring Semester you may register for 2-6 credits and May Session/Summer Session you may register for 2-5 credits.
UC 4001 is a prerequisite for UC 4002.
Core courses must be taken for a letter grade (on the A/F grading basis) and completed with a grade of C- or better, except 4001 and 4002, which must be taken pass/fail.
