Admission Requirements

To be admitted into the Addiction Studies Graduate Certificate Program, Public Health Provider Track, you must have:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited post-secondary U.S. institution or its foreign equivalent;
  • A preferred performance level for your undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0. (If you have relevant professional experience, but don't have a 3.0 GPA, contact an adviser.);
  • Completed an application form and officially apply for admission to the program after taking one or two courses.

To meet the admissions criteria for the graduate Service Provider Track, applicants must have:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited post-secondary U.S. institution or its foreign equivalent;
  • The equivalent of the undergraduate certificate core courses:  SW 5709, SW 5711, PubH 3003/6003, and SW 5810 OR
    be a licensed alcohol/drug counselor, licensed family and marriage therapist, physician, licensed social worker, or licensed psychologist, or have a recognized professional certificate/license in a clinical affiliated field;
  • A preferred performance level for your undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0. (If you have relevant professional experience, but don't have a 3.0 GPA, contact an adviser.) ;
  • Completed an application form and officially apply for admission to the program after taking one or two courses.

No Graduate Record Exam (GRE) required.

Admission to the certificate program is recommended no later than after completion of the first course.

Tuition for 2006-07 for a student admitted to this certificate program is $370.75 per credit.

Fees

To be a candidate for the Minnesota Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor's (MLADC) exam, you must have: 

  • A bachelor's degree (after January 2008)
  • Approximately 18 semester credits related to alcohol and drug counseling
  • Completed an internship of 880 clock hours
  • Demonstrated competency in the required 12 core functions:  screening, intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, counseling, case management, crisis intervention, client education, referral, reports and record keeping, and consultation

Application Procedures

Although you may take one or two program courses before applying for official admission into this certificate program, we suggest that you apply for admission as soon as possible. Once you are accepted into the program, you will receive timely program updates and course registration information along with other admitted student benefits.
