What are the standards of admission to the UMTC PSEO Program?
Due to a limitation on the number of students in the program, admission to the UMTC PSEO Program is highly competitive. Approximately 800-900 students apply for 450 seats for fall semesters, and 100-200 students apply for 50 seats for spring semesters. While there is no absolute requirement for high school GPA, the average admitted student's GPA is around 3.7. The application also requires a written essay which is reviewed not only for content, but for the student's potential ability to write at a college level. The admission committee also assesses the number and type of honors, AP, or other accelerated courses the applicant has taken.

Do PSEO students have advisers?
Yes. The Advanced High School Student Services Office acts not only as admissions and registrar for PSEO students, but also as a source of academic advisers. AHS3 advisers have been trained in academic advising, and understand the University of Minnesota academic policies and guidelines. We welcome feedback from instructors about any issue related to PSEO students. Please feel free to call our office at 612-626-1666 or send an email to ccepseoa@umn.edu for any questions or concerns you may have.

Do PSEO students receive any special consideration in departments or classes?
No. For all practical purposes, PSEO students should be treated like any other University of Minnesota students. However, it is important to remember that high school students are at different developmental stages than traditional college students which may lead to unexpected situations in class.

What are Monitor Letters?
Monitor letters are similar to midterm alerts, but are generated in the Advanced High School Student Services Office. During registration, an adviser may choose to monitor a student's progress while there is still time for intervention if necessary. The more information the faculty instructor can provide about the student's status in class, the better AHS3 advisers can assist that particular student as well as future students.

Instructor Approval for 3xxx-5xxx Courses
PSEO students are required to get approval from instructors in order to take 3xxx-5xxx courses. This is not the same as asking for permission numbers. AHS3 advisers want to make sure the instructor of the course knows that a high school student will be in the class. As with granting permission numbers, this approval is left to the discretion of the instructor. If approval is denied, AHS3 advisers will not allow the student to continue in the class.
