2009 PSEO Orientation

Please follow the link at the end of this Orientation section to reach the online orientation for new PSEO students. All new students must submit the final quiz at the end of the orientation before they may call to make a registration appointment. Please wait at least one hour after submitting your final quiz before calling for an appointment. We want to be sure your submission has a chance to get to us; if we have not received it, you will not be able to schedule an appointment.

Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.0 or later is required for the final quiz to work properly. You can download the latest version of Adobe Reader at http://www.adobe.com. If you cannot get the latest version, you may be able to submit the quiz via e-mail, but you may get a submission error.

The following documents will be necessary for you to continue the orientation process:

Online Student Handbook
The Student Handbook is entirely online, and is required reading for all PSEO students and their parents/guardians. You will find the answers to many of your questions within, in addition to the procedures, policies, and expectations for PSEO students.

Student/Adviser Agreement
This document is a contract between PSEO students and the Advanced High School Student Services Office. You must bring a signed copy to your registration appointment.

Schedule Planning Grid
Use this grid to help map days and times of your planned courses. It will help you keep track of your class times to avoid time and day conflicts between classes.

Placement Information
This document will help you determine which classes to take based on your math and chemistry placement tests, as well as provide information about AP, IB, and transfer courses.

Online Orientation
This presentation will walk you through the preparations for your registration appointment. Please listen carefully, and record any questions you may have remaining on the quiz at the end of the session. When you reach the quiz, be sure to select the download option to reach the quiz entry form. Do not close your browser window until you have received verification that your quiz was submitted successfully. You may e-mail a copy of your quiz to the AHS3 Office for additional verification. Remember to wait for at least one hour before calling for an appointment to allow your quiz submission to reach us.

PSEO Program Background

Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Act at the U of M

Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Act (PSEOA) (1985) allows juniors and seniors in Minnesota public, private, home, and charter schools to register concurrently for high school and post-secondary course work; the State Department of Education pays for the post-secondary tuition and books. You can review a copy of the PSEO law on the Minnesota Office of Revisor of Statutes page. The Advanced High School Student Services (AHS³) office, a part of the College of Continuing Education, administers the program for the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities.

The University of Minnesota has always served very gifted younger students. Since 1985, however, PSEO has led to a significant increase in the number of high school students taking college courses. There were 91 students in the fall of 1985 and today there are nearly 700 students registering at the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities under the provisions of this statute annually. The participants come from more than 100 high schools in 80 school districts. Students in the top 15th percentile of their high school class have the best chance of being admitted into our PSEO program, though other students are admitted into the program on a space available basis.

The On-Campus Program

  •  Approximately 600 students per semester.
  •  Classes are taught by University faculty and graduate assistants.
  •  Students take a broad range of courses mostly in the College of Liberal Arts and the Institute of Technology.
  •  50% of PSEO students eventually attend the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities campus after graduation.
