What Do I Need to Know About Summer Session?

  • Credits: University of Minnesota students are allowed to register for a maximum of 15 undergraduate credits or 18 graduate credits overall for the Summer Term (May Session plus Summer Session). Exceptions require approval from your college Scholastic Committee.

  • Full- or half-time status depends on how many credits you are taking. For undergraduates, taking 12 or more credits confers full-time status. Taking 6 or more credits is considered a full-time load for graduate students. Half-time status is 6–11 credits for undergraduates and 3–5 credits for graduate students. This applies to the sum total of all credits taken in the Summer Term (May Session and Summer Session).

  • Costs are determined by your student status and how many credits you take. As a general rule, summer 2012 tuition is the same as the 2011–12 academic year. Admitted students taking 3 or more credits will also be charged a Student Services Fee, and a Collegiate or Technology Fee may be assessed by your college of admission. A comprehensive list of tuition and fees can be found here.

  • Billing statements are sent out via University e-mail three times over the summer: June 9 (payment due July 4), July 7 (payment due August 1), and August 4 (payment due August 22). Each time you register, change your registration, or send in a payment, your account will be adjusted. Please check your student account on the Web for these adjustments, as your billing statement is only updated or generated once per billing cycle. Each payment in full must be received by the due date or you will be charged a $30 late payment fee. For more information, visit Costs and read the Billing and Payment section.

Non-degree (non-admitted/visiting) students: If full payment for tuition, fees, and all other charges is not received by the due date on your bill, your enrollment will be canceled. Payments may be made by cash, check, traveler’s check, money orders, cashier’s checks, or checks drawn from credit cards. Students and authorized payers can also pay online by direct debit from their checking or savings accounts, or by credit card. (For details on credit card payment, go to Costs.)

  • Summer financial aid may be available to you through the University’s Office of Student Finance (OSF) if you are officially admitted to a degree program on the Twin Cities campus. Summer is part of the 2011–2012 financial aid cycle. If you did not file one for last fall and/or spring terms, you must file a 2011–2012 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to receive summer aid. You may not use 2012-2013 financial aid eligibility to pay for summer charges. May Session and Summer Session are combined for purposes of determining your eligibility.

Visiting (non-admitted) students and new students admitted for the 2012–13 academic year (effective fall 2012) are not eligible for summer financial aid or scholarships. More details can be found under Financial Aid here
