Costs
The cost of University of Minnesota courses includes tuition and various fees. These fees are determined by your status at the University, your college of admission, and your program. Textbooks and class materials must be purchased separately.
See also the General Information section of the current course catalog for more information.
Tuition and Fees
Tuition rates are determined by several factors, including your residency status, the college you're admitted to (if applicable), and your undergraduate or graduate status. They are subject to change.
Students who are not formally admitted to a University of Minnesota degree or certificate program will be registered and charged as undergraduates (except in a few special cases—see Graduate Credit for Non-degree Students).
Undergraduate students who are admitted to the U of M will be billed at undergraduate rates. Graduate students will be billed at graduate-level or professional school tuition rates.
- Tuition and University-wide fees are charged for all courses. The rates for non-degree seeking students can be found at One Stop:
- If you are formally admitted to a University of Minnesota degree program, you also will pay other fees, depending on your status and college of admission.
- If you are taking an Online and Distance Learning (ODL) course, you will also be charged an ODL fee:
| 1 ODL credit per semester | $0 |
| 2-5 ODL credits | $90.00 |
| 6-10 ODL credits | $180.00 |
| 11 or more ODL credits | $270.00 |

Billing and Payment
The University's One Stop Web site is the best resource for information on how to pay the University. As you review this information keep the following in mind.
- You will not receive a paper bill from the University for your tuition and fees. Do not send payment when you register. An e-mail notice will be sent to your University e-mail account when your online billing statement is ready.
- Your billing statement shows all charges (tuition and fees, bookstore charges, etc.) to your Student Account and due dates.
- You must pay all charges, in full, by the billing statement due date.
- Monitor your online account frequently by going to One Stop and clicking on "Student Accounts."
- You can pay the University via:
- UM Pay (the online payment system)
- postal mail,
- a campus drop box
- in person at a Bursar Office
- International students are welcome to enroll in Online and Distance Learning courses. You must pay the University of Minnesota directly in U.S. dollars. The University does not employ commercial agents for course registration or payment.
- If you have payment questions, One Stop counselors are available via e-mail, phone, or in person. For more information, contact One Stop.
The Installment Plan
Non-degree students are not eligible for the installment plan. Full payment must be received, not postmarked, by the billing due date or all your courses for the semester will be canceled.
The installment plan is available for ODL sections A and B but not for sections C, D, and E. There is no installment plan for the summer term.
Past Due Accounts
If you are a degree-seeking student and if your account is past due, a “hold” will be placed on your academic student record, meaning that you may not register for courses, get a transcript, or receive a diploma. Balances from previous terms are due in full. All payments you make will be applied to your oldest charge. You will continue to be billed late payment and installment fees if your balance due continues unpaid. Past due accounts may be subject to collection fees and procedures.
Verification of Payment
If you need verification that you have paid your tuition and fees, you can print out your online student account information by going to One Stop (click on “Student Account” under Quick Links).
If you plan to claim education tax credits, your billing and account information is an important reference. More information about these tax credits is available online here and on One Stop (select “Educational tax benefits” under Quick Links).
Refunds
You may be eligible for a tuition refund if you cancel your registration by the deadlines. The deadline is based on the start date of the term you were registered for.
