71st Annual Income Tax Short Course

Tax practitioners attending the Income Tax Short Course will:

  • Appreciate the value of ethical behavior
  • Become aware of legislative changes to federal tax law and implementing regulations
  • Review basic tax law and its application to selected situations
  • Be better able to deal with individual taxpayer and business tax issues
  • Be able to develop a tax research process
  • Be able to apply recent court rulings and cases in their practices
  • Become familiar with changes in Minnesota tax law
  • Satisfy continuing education requirements

Topics covered in the 2013 workbook:

  • New legislation that affects tax returns for 2013 and future years
  • Rulings and cases issued from September 2012 through August 2013
  • New provisions for practitioners regarding the Affordable Care Act including employer credit for low-income employees
  • Individual taxpayer issues including Form 8949 reporting for investments, wages paid to household workers, savings bonds, and gambling
  • Business issues such as single-member 401(k) and summary of domestic production activity deduction
  • Agricultural and natural resource issues including labor issues, depreciation rules, and effects of 2012 drought on 2013 tax return
  • Business entities covering the tax consequences of buying and selling partnerships, corporations, and LLCs
  • IRS issues including the Mortgage Debt Relief Act and the Automated Underreported (CP2000) and soft notices
  • Ethics including a case study approach to address such ethical issues as who is entitled to receive copies of entity returns
  • Education Provisions details education tax credits, deduction, and exclusions, and the interactions of those rules
  • Tax issues in divorce including dependent exemption deduction and allocation of itemized deductions
  • Updated income tax rates and other rates and thresholds that change
