Admission

Admission and Registration

The Bachelor of Applied Science is a non-freshman-admitting degree program. This means that you can apply for admission only after you have completed a minimum of 30 transferable semester credits (pre-major admission). Major status admission requires that students have completed a minimum of 45 transferable semester credits, including the major prerequisite courses.

Admission Requirements

When you apply for admission, your application will be individually reviewed in a holistic manner. Students may be admitted to either pre-major or major status. Students admitted to pre-major status benefit from the same University resources, academic advising, community, and financial aid support as those students admitted to major status. Achieving major status, however, is contingent upon meeting the major-status admission criteria below.

Pre-major Admission Criteria

  • A minimum of 30 transferable semester credits. Use the Transfer Guide to ensure that the course credits will transfer to the U of M and count towards bachelor of applied science degree requirements.
  • A 2.5 or better cumulative grade point average
  • Demonstrated interest in IT field

Major Status Admission Criteria

  • A minimum of 45 transferable semester credits
  • A 2.5 or better cumulative grade point average
  • Completion of prerequisite courses (or in progress):
  • Short Calculus or Calculus I
  • Physics I and lab
  • Introduction to Computing and Programming Concepts (CSci 1133)
  • Introduction to Algorithms and Data Structures (CSci 1933)
  • Machine Architecture and Organization (CSci 2021)

Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC)

The MnTC is intended to ease the transfer experience for students who have been strategic in their course taking at a Minnesota community college or any of the other MNSCU institutions.

You are expected to complete the entire MnTC prior to your first term of enrollment at the U of M. If you have not completed the MnTC, you will be required to complete at least some of the U of M Liberal Education requirements.

If you have any questions about how your courses will transfer, please contact a Bachelor of Applied Science adviser or visit the One Stop website.

Students with International Credentials: International transfer credit evaluations are completed after you have confirmed your enrollment in the degree program. When the evaluation is available, you will receive an email with instructions on how to access your transfer credit report.

Admission Process

Step 1: Evaluate Your Prior Course Work and Complete Prerequisites

Use Transferology to help determine how your completed course work will transfer to the University.

Use the Transfer Guide to determine if you have met the necessary prerequisites (identified by an asterisk * in the left column). Course names in the Transfer Guide reflect general subject areas; exact titles may vary from school to school.

If you would like help with this evaluation process from a Bachelor of Applied Science program adviser:

  • Complete a Planning Chart Request and attach your transcript (unofficial transcripts are acceptable) and resume (optional). Send it to the College of Continuing Education as directed on the form. A Planning Chart will be returned to you with information on what course requirements you have met and those that have yet to be completed.
  • For additional assistance after you have received a Planning Chart, please make an appointment with a program adviser by calling 612-624-4000 or e-mailing cceinfo@umn.edu.
  • Depending on the results of the above evaluation, you may have to complete additional prerequisites. A program adviser can help you chart a course to do this. Several options are available to you depending on your current status:
  • If you are currently admitted to the University, you can begin enrolling in Bachelor of Applied Science prerequisite courses.
  • You can take Bachelor of Applied Science courses as a non-admitted student. See How to Take Credit Courses for more information.
  • You can complete the prerequisites at another postsecondary institution.

Step 2: Apply for Admission

Once you've satisfied the pre-major admission criteria, you can apply for admission to the College of Continuing Education. The process you follow depends on your status:

Lower Division Course Work Options

If you have not yet completed your lower division college course work, you have three options:

  1. You may apply for admission to one of the freshman-admitting colleges at the U of M. Once you are admitted, you can complete the prerequisite courses and then request a change of college to the College of Continuing Education using the Application for Change of College Form. See the U of M Admission site for detailed information.
  2. You can complete the prerequisites as a non-admitted student at the University.
  3. You can complete your lower division course work at another college or university. You will be given the same consideration for admission as students who complete their lower division coursework at the University. See the Transfer Guide for more information on how your credits will transfer.
